The Savannah Georgia Way Of Life

Savannah, GA, prides itself on being just a bit "quirky." The eccentric personality type thrives in Savannah because there is an abundance of delightfully eccentric people who are accepted in the nickname "Hostess City of the South." Savannah is known for its architecture, art scene, fabulous food, amazing people, and "quirky" experiences to try.

The Architecture Of Savannah GA

General James Oglethorpe, who founded Savannah in 1733, created the first grid city plan. Savannah is the oldest city plan in the United States to use a modular grid that mixes residential blocks with multi-purpose areas for public use. The squares people meet and gather on today were once used as training grounds for the Southern militia during the Civil War. The original design had six public squares and in fifty years that number had ballooned to twenty-four. The Davenport house, built in 1820, is America's first "style" referred to as Federal style and was almost demolished in 1950. But, due to the founding act of the Historic Savannah Foundation, it was saved and so the preservation of the city's original, local architecture and beauty remains to this day.

Savannahs Art Scene

The art scene in Savannah cannot be explained without mentioning the Talfair Museum. Established in 1883 by Mary Telfair, a local philanthropist is the oldest southern art museum and the first art museum founded by a woman. The Telfair consists of three buildings displaying fine art spanning centuries. There are over 6,300 American and European paintings, works on paper and sculptures to be admired. The artists include Rembrandt Peale best known for his portraits of George Washington during the Revolutionary War. George Bellows was known for his urban depictions of life in New York City in the early 1900s. These works are just the tip of the iceberg of this magnificent collection of museums in Savannah GA.

Fabulous Food For Thought

The decadence of the food matches the brilliance of this the fifth largest city in Georgia. Three must-visit restaurants in the city require reservations to be made at least two months in advance. The first is, The Olde Pink House, constructed in the 1780's and has been operating since 1971 (also it is said to be haunted). The must-order at this restaurant is the fried green tomatoes and grilled pork tenderloin with bourbon molasses. Second on this exclusive list is The Pirate's House, also said to be haunted. This restaurant is housed in the oldest structure in Georgia, built-in 1750 as an inn and tavern. The go-to here is the fried chicken and biscuits, it's a can't miss! I saved the best for last, The Grey! It is the most modern but easily the most famous. It is housed in a 1930s art deco-style Greyhound bus station which is one of its attractions but, the food is out of this world! The go-to here are the crab beignets and anything with their homemade foie gras! You can't go wrong with any of these fabulous Southern gems!

Amazing  People and "Quirky" Experiences to try

Savannah is one of the best "people-watching" places in the world, in my experience. Just sit at any one of the park benches, that are all around the city squares, surrounded by the Spanish moss in the trees and classical architecture all around, and watch all the different fabulous people and listen to all their varying conversations, it will take you away. But, if you want something a little more macabre then visit the Serial Killer Museum, yes you read this correctly, a museum filled with "murderabilia" from serial killers and other oddities! Everything from clown paintings of John Wayne Gacy to displays of UFO abductions and cult memorabilia. After visiting there you may want something that will be a little sweet and what's sweeter than a bunch of kittens and snuggly cats? Well, you arrive at the Pounce Cat Cafe here you can have a drink and cuddle with one of the 20+ kittens and cats they have roaming there.
