Moving to a New House Checklist

One Month before the Move:

Begin to organize and de-clutter belongings. This would also be a great time to collect moving supplies, i.e. boxes, tape... Do this by methodically going from room to room and cleaning junk you will not take with you and the things you will bring to your new home. Start by packing non-essential items and setting them aside or throwing them out. Some people go as far as renting a roll off dumpster. These things would be off-season clothes, toys no longer used, cooking equipment you don't need that month, and bedrooms not being used. All the non-essential stuff can be stored in the room you are not using for that month. It will give you a sense of momentum and you will not be overwhelmed when it gets close to move day. You would also be wise to find a moving company and book them or secure the rental of a U-haul if doing the move yourself.

A Couple of Weeks Before the Move:

Continue to pack up everything that is not necessary for your day-to-day life. All but just a few clothes, most toys, most towels, and bedding. This would also be a great time to call a dumpster rental company to throw most of your larger items and trash, you will not be taking with you. Dumpster companies usually have 7-10 written into their prices and the day charge if you need it a little longer is typically nominal, around $10. By disposing of your larger items away your house will feel less cluttered andthe stress of moving could be abated a bit.

A Week Before the Move:

Now, you should have enough clothes and toiletries for the week left out.Time to pack up the essentials wrap plates and dinnerware, pack the rest of your clothes and bedding, and the remainder of your cookware and utensils. There should be boxes and furniture left in your old house, at this point. Make sure you call the utility companies to turn them off at your old home and on at your new home on the correct date. This would be a great time to let the post office know you are moving to a new address and give them the moving date and when to change. This is when the stress level might be at its highest and might be a good time for a little mini vacation or a weekend at a hotel. There is nothing left to do in your old house and all your things are packedso why not. Also, call the dumpster company to pick up the dumpster and get it out of there so the moving truck can move in.

Moving Day:

This is an exciting, yet stressful, time for you and your family. You will need to supervise the movers to make sure they are careful with your things and if they have any questions. After everything has been moved out it will be time to make a final walk-thru of your old house for the final time. Take time to make sure the movers got everything and nothing was damaged that the new owners could say that you did. Now, go to your new house and supervise the movers as they unpack your things. You will now need to separate the boxes into their appropriate rooms and begin to unpack them.

After you Move in:

Again, continue to unpack and put your things in their appropriate places in your house. You need to update all your cards and information with your banks and institutions. Now it is time to explore your new neighborhood and meet your neighbors!

Enjoy your new home!
